About

A pencil, a sheet of paper, an hour.

Sketch Hour is a timetable of sketching classes for people who would like to draw and never quite started. Every class is an hour long, needs nothing you don't already own, and starts at a set time, like an evening class. Afterwards, a person looks at what you drew and tells you how to make the next one better.

Why it exists

Most people who want to draw aren't short of tutorials. There are thousands of free videos, and every one of them can wait until later. They also can't do the thing that actually makes you better: look at your drawing and tell you what to change.

An evening class does both. It starts at seven whether you feel ready or not, and at the end the teacher walks round and looks at your page. Sketch Hour brings those two things to your kitchen table: a set time to draw along, and a written review of the drawing you made.

Two halves of every class

The hour

A recorded lesson, broadcast at your start time to everyone booked into it. Step by step, with the reference on screen and time to draw in each section. Start with First Lines, then follow what you want to draw: people or places.

The review

Photograph your page and upload it after class. A reviewer writes back within 48 hours with what is working, the one or two changes that will help most, and something to practise. It lands in your dashboard and your inbox.

How the classes work

Each lesson is pre-recorded, then broadcast at set times to everyone who booked that slot. Nobody can pause it, rewind it or skip ahead, and after an hour it's over. You see the same step as everyone else in your session, and you can chat with them while it runs.

We're upfront about the recording because it matters. The teacher on screen can't see you while you draw. The personal part comes afterwards, when your drawing is reviewed.

What we won't do

  • No subscription

You pay for the class you book, once, and the review of your drawing is included. Nothing renews.

  • No shopping list

Every class works with a pencil and printer paper. We will never make a class depend on supplies we sell.

  • No fake crowd

The people in your chat are the people in your class. The assistant is labelled as one.

  • No form letters

Your feedback is written about your drawing, by a person who has looked at it.

A note from the founder

I started Sketch Hour for everyone who has said "I can't draw" and half believed it. Drawing isn't a gift some people are born with. It's a handful of ways of looking, and they can be learned in an hour at a kitchen table.

What most of us are missing isn't talent or fancy materials. It's a set time to sit down, someone showing us what to look for, and somebody looking at what we made afterwards and telling us what to try next. So that's what this is: a timetable, a pencil, and a real review of your page after every class.
